Run Backups on any Wii Without a Modchip

Welcome to my instructable on how to run backed up Wii games without a Modchip.

I TOTALLY RE-DID THIS INSTRUCTABLE SO IT IS MUCH EASIER AND BECAUSE cIOS AND BACKUP LAUNCHER UPDATED. If you did this instructable before, there are new versions so please delete The Backup Launcher Channel you have now and do steps 1, 2, and 4 again

How It works (a bit T3cHy): Well the Wii System Menu currently runs on IOS30 (for all those who understand IOS). Homebrew runs on IOS35, and basically what you are going to do today is to install a Custom IOS36 into IOS249 (Won't effect your wii)

This is a Sequel to this guide here.

NOTE: Only follow this guide if you own a copy of the game. My copy of Super Mario Sluggers got stepped on so i got it from a bay of pirates, which, again, is perfectly legal if you own the game. If you get a game without owning it first it is called PIRACY and is ILLEGAL. I am not responsible for your Illegal actions and hold NO LIABILITY.

Okay, lets begin.

You need:

Homebrew Channel
SD Card
Computer With DVD-R Burner
DVD-Rs (The higher quality the better)
Wii (Duh)
ImgBurn

FOR ALL OF YOU WHO UPDATED YOUR WII AND HAVE The Hombrew Channel INSTALLED, GOTO STEP 5.

step 1

Getting the Files

Get the Files

1. Get all of the files here

2. Copy the CONTENTS of the folder Copy the CONTENTS to ROOT to the ROOT of the SD Card

3. There is an ImgBurn Installer there if you want it

step 2

Install cIOS36 Rev7

In this step we install cIOS36 Rev7

Step 1: Open the Homebrew Channel

Step 2: Click on the App labeled "Apps/cIOS Rev7/boot.dol" and then click Load

Step 3: Read the Disclaimer and Agree or Disagree

Step 4: Select WAD INSTALL

Step 5: Once it is done, select the option to restart your Wii

Step 6: You're done!

Install DVDx

Any DVDx installed must be uninstalled before preceding.

Step 1: Open The Homebrew Channel

Step 2: Select the app labeled "Apps/DVDx/boot.dol", and hit load

2a. Select "Advanced Install"
2b. For IOS, select 249 (IOS249) (You have to use the D-Pad to select 249)
2c. Hit Install

step 4

Install Backup Loader 0.3

In this step you will install a Channel called the Backup Launcher 0.3 GAMMA Channel

Step 1: Open The Homebrew Channel

Step 2: Select the app labeled "Apps/WADManager1.3/boot.dol", and hit load

Step 3: Read the Disclaimer and Agree or Disagree

Step 4: Hit A

Step 5: Make sure Backup Launcher 0.3 Gamma.wad is selected and hit + (Plus)

Step 6: Hit A when it asks you if you're sure you want to install it

It will Install and bring you back to the list

Step 7: Hit the Home button to restart your Wii

You should have a new channel...The Backup Launcher 0.3 Gamma Channel

Make and Run Games

I will teach you how to make and run games

if you have an iso that is 4.37GB it is UNPATCHED (1:1) and if it is 3.99GB it is PATCHED.

Bakcup Launcher works better with unpatched games than it does with patched ones

If you have an Iso you should burn it on to a DVD-R at 2x-4x, but the loader runs at 3x, so 3x is perfect if you can burn at 3x. A great FREE burning program is ImgBurn for PCs and you can use the built in Disk Utility for Macs

All you have to do then is stick it in your wii and hit launch game

step 6

Bypass the October 23rd Update

This was copied from here (Do only Steps 1-8)

Since this is not from me and i have never had to use this, I take no responsibilty for this whatsoever. I will TRY to help in the comments, but i probabaly can't help that much

NOTE: for people struggling with the update, do this and THEN do steps 1, 2, 3, and 4

Step 1 Install the Homebrew Channel onto your Wii. (my guide here

Step 2 Update to the latest Wii Firmware.

Step 3 Download this file and copy the contents inside the Wii Fix Tools to the root of your SD Card.

Step 3.5: Download IOS16-64-v257-prod.wad (Google It)

Step 4 Using the Homebrew Channel, open WAD Manager 1.3.

Step 5 Press A on the Wii Mote once. The Wii should detect a SD Card. Press A again to see a list of WADs on the SD Card. Use the D-Pad to select IOS16-64-v257-prod.wad. Press the '+' button to install the WAD. Once it has installed the WAD, press the Home button to restart you Wii.

Step 6 Using the Homebrew Channel, open Custom WM. Now using the same method as in Step 5, install the cios_fix.wad. Once it has installed the WAD, press the Home button to restart you Wii.

NOTE: If that fails to install, just use 'Wad Manager 1.3'.

Step 7 Using the Homebrew Channel, open IOS Downgrader. Just follow the instructions and wait until it finishes installing the necessary IOSs.

NOTE: You're Wii does require connection to the Internet otherwise it won't work. Same for the next step.
If you do have a Internet connection and you get errors while it's installing the IOSs, just restart the Wii and try again.

Step 8 - Using the Homebrew Channel, open Install Shop IOS51. Say Yes to installing the IOS51, Yes to patching a fix and Yes to the Wii Shop Channel (Only Hit yes if you want to use the Wii SHop Channel).

It will delete everything homebrew related on your wii. This is preliminary information that I am getting but I would not take the risk.

ok, i finally got a game to run, but it showed a black screen that said, : an error has occured. eject the disk then power off the wii. refer to the wii user manual. im just going to keep trying different write speeds... maybe ill patch the iso if i can find a program.

well i saw a youtube vid with wiigator backup runner and he played force unleashed just fine.. then again it was a video on how to patch iso files... and he was running version 2 and not 3....

I have tried 3 times now and none of the them have worked..
I have used DVD-R DL discs with imgburn at 2.4x and it didnt work.
So i bought some Verbatim DVD+R DL discs at 2.4x with imgburn
and got to 27% and it didn't work!!!!.
It keeps coming up with...failed to write sectors. and an unknown cause or something
like that.
I would really appreciate some help.

How do you boot this installer? I put both the installer and the WAD on the root of my SD card, but it just boots to the normal menu. I've tried it several times with no luck.

Look at Step 4 of my other instructable. This tell you how to boot apps from the SD card. rename the installer to boot.dol, and put it in the following folders:

ROOT of SD CARD=>Apps=>cIOS36=>boot.dol

The root of the SD card is the part right when you open the SD card, where there is no folder above it

I appreciate your time, but dude you got to be specific on how to run the actual installer, not everyone here is familiar with the process. I have the same SD card setup as you explained, I have renamed the installer to boot.dol, but Wii boots up normally with the card in the slot. Do I have to launch the installer from the homebrew channel, or do it some other way?

okay buddy, there 2 main ways to launch homebrew. 1. twilight hack. you need loz:tp to do that. 2. homebrew channel. if you already have homebrew channel, you just need to put the ios36 folder in your apps folder on the sd card. once in homebrew channel it will show up and you can select it. google "twilight hack wii" for twilight hack process, because you must know twilight hack to get homebrew channel.

Yeah I figured it out. :) I tried to delete my comment, I guess it didn't. Got everything working, I'm actually quite surprised. But my backup copy of SPM crashed out on the end of 1-4. :(

AND Since October 23rd, there has been an update that prevents new installations of cIOS.

So basically:

NO ONE EVER UPDATE YOU WII EVER IF YOU WANT THIS INSTRUCTABLE TO WORK

All you can do is check http://wiibrew.org for any updates to bypass this update. Trust me the team of Wii H4X0RZ is trying as hard as they can

well then what the heck? nothing shows up and im pretty sure that's not a good thing. certain things will load then just freeze. HBC says i have ios36 and i cant follow these instructions because it just wont read the files. ive ruled out it being an SD card fault, so it has to be in the firmware. downgraders dont work either btw.

When your highlighted over the IOS 36 (or whatever number shows up) hit the right or left arrow on the control pad. You should see more IOS number options, if 249 doesn't show up, it means you haven't installed the Custom IOS36 correctly.

I just bought a new wii and I put the files on the card and put the card in the wii and turn it on and nothing happens. I tried looking on the storage area on the wii and does not see anything on the card. I looked at your step 4 and followed that to a T. I am pulling my hair out on this one

I have a wii running 3.3E and i have managed to install all the programs and stuff but when i put a burned game into the drive and clock launch game in backup loader, it gives me some kind of error. the text overlaps itself so it's pretty hard to read. I think it says: No valid DVD disk or something.

Can anyone help?

hey thundaboy... ret - 1 errors are fix-able... just got it to work.. turns out i needed to re-download the IOS36-64-v1042.wad from a different site then you posted. but it is now working fine.

on a second note... don't tell people not to post ret errors on here... they are all diffrent and some are fix-able. Someone (maybe even besides you sir) may know a fix...

so next time, if it bugs you to see people wanting help on the comments and it gets you all flustered, DON'T READ IT.

Trust me, everything i install is removable, but if you do something stupid (getting an error won't do anything), I mean like REALLY stupid, like if you find a fake, corrupted WAD and install it. Physically it will do no damage, yet there are MYTHS (I doubt they are true) that it damages your laser, and yet not one of these 66 comments were about damaged lasers.

Obviously you need to know how to torrent first. Unless you mean the torrent with the ISO didn't work. In which case, find another torrent with a lot of seeders.

yeah, basically you can thin of a torrent as a kind of file compression type. bit torrent is the extractor. if you are in linux you can use transmission to "extract" the torrent. i use azerus because it works faster than transmission on my computer. you can google bit torrent, or if you go to www.torrentreactor.net on the home page there is a link for a program called bitlord, and it all works just the same. after you install the program, the next time you download or double click a torrent it will run in that program and download. good luck : )

You see, you get a BitTorrent Client, and then open the torrent with the client, and it will Leech the data from many Seeds and then you will have an iso. Google "torrenting" because this isn't an instructable on how to torrent

Yes. Nothing will happen to your wii, your wii will operate 100% as it did before. The system menu or any of the wii software is not affected and everything will be the same.

But if this is to assure this is not a fake, google Backup Launcher 0.3. It is very popular and all i did was make a guide on how to use it

The reason I ask is because I checked youtube and there are different Backup Loaders that appear, but each has a different visual interface and I'm not sure what is real what is not. If we see yours in action we'll at least know what we should see when we replicate the procedure.

that installer thing did come up and i installed it bla bla bla thing reset but when i load upi the dvdx thing go to advances setup ios selection all i get is double diget numbers no 3 digit ones? what i do wrong

Ahh, I see. It wasn't clear that I had to use the arrow keys to select IOS249.

Things are working a little better now. Do I need to "undo" the botched install into IOS36 somehow?

For what it's worth, I burned 3 games. One worked with the "botched" install (even worked with DVDx removed). Another game got a weird error, but is working correctly now. The 3rd game is toast. Gets a disk read error (burned it again, same results)...

Well, the game that isn't working says it works with backup loader 0.1 and backup launcher 0.1, but apparently hasn't been tested with backup launcher 0.3. I'm wondering if I got a bad copy of the ISO.

Go here for an updated list and there's a new, updated Backup Launcher 0.3 Gamma with better compatibility and the ability to boot from the Disc Channel.

Make sure the ISO file size is exactly 4,589,824 KB. There's a lot of other factors as well.

yup, but making a copy requires use of DVDDumper, a program i have yet to use. Once i use it there will be another instructable on how to Dump DVD

You could have at least waited until the loader wasn't in beta testing to post it on here. Anyone doing this note that you are installing BETA software that only works with about 60% of games right now, and is known to be buggy. The Gamma version with Disc Channel Backup loading will be out any day, and has the compatability up to around 95%

Look at Step 4 of my other instructable. This tell you how to boot apps from the SD card. rename the installer to boot.dol, and put it in the following folders:

ROOT of SD CARD=>Apps=>cIOS36=>boot.dol

The root of the SD card is the part right when you open the SD card, where there is no folder above it

I have the same SD card setup as you explained, I have renamed the installer to boot.dol, but Wii boots up normally with the card in the slot. Do I have to launch the installer from the homebrew channel, or do it some other way?

okay buddy, there 2 main ways to launch homebrew. 1. twilight hack. you need loz:tp to do that. 2. homebrew channel. if you already have homebrew channel, you just need to put the ios36 folder in your apps folder on the sd card. once in homebrew channel it will show up and you can select it. google "twilight hack wii" for twilight hack process, because you must know twilight hack to get homebrew channel.

Yeah I figured it out. :) I tried to delete my comment, I guess it didn't. Got everything working, I'm actually quite surprised. But my backup copy of SPM crashed out on the end of 1-4. :(

HBC says i have ios36 and i cant follow these instructions because it just wont read the files. ive ruled out it being an SD card fault, so it has to be in the firmware. downgraders dont work either btw.

If you don't see IOS 249, it means you don't have it. Retry Step 1.

Ahh, I see. It wasn't clear that I had to use the arrow keys to select IOS249.

Things are working a little better now. Do I need to "undo" the botched install into IOS36 somehow?

For what it's worth, I burned 3 games. One worked with the "botched" install (even worked with DVDx removed). Another game got a weird error, but is working correctly now. The 3rd game is toast. Gets a disk read error (burned it again, same results)...

nevermind, it needs to be apps-->wadmanager-->the wad manager dol file renamed boot and then the backup launcher was in the wad folder as outlined above

yeah, basically you can thin of a torrent as a kind of file compression type. bit torrent is the extractor. if you are in linux you can use transmission to "extract" the torrent. i use azerus because it works faster than transmission on my computer. you can google bit torrent, or if you go to www.torrentreactor.net on the home page there is a link for a program called bitlord, and it all works just the same. after you install the program, the next time you download or double click a torrent it will run in that program and download. good luck : )

You see, you get a BitTorrent Client, and then open the torrent with the client, and it will Leech the data from many Seeds and then you will have an iso. Google "torrenting" because this isn't an instructable on how to torrent
